The music project
The attention that the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte dedicates to training and promotion of young musicians focalizes on the one hand on commissions of new works which enter the reportoire of the ensembles which interpret them, and on the other hand on the creation of a workshop which involves authors as well as performers.
To pick out young talents we rely on the suggestions of an internationally-known composer, who indicates the more interesting and promising personalities. Then a chamber setting is chosen, which should have a reference to a corresponding work in the classic repertoire. Once that the needed chamber ensemble is found and that the commissioned works are finished, the tutor, the young composers and the performers reunite in Banna for the week-long workshop.
In this way authors and performers are put together and have the chance of confront themselves on a musical text, analysing and discussing it with a view to the first performance which takes place in the Fondazione’s concert hall; the final phase of the creative process melts itself with the perfoming moment, involving all the musicisans.

Fabio Nieder
There are composers who offer no surprises from one piece to another, which may be reassuring for their commissioners. I cannot accept certain conditions, like for example: compose, pieces etc. Until now, I have always made use of music writing as a possible dimension in which to think in music, organise worlds, grasp visions and discover places. However, I do not intend to accept music writing as a permanent and unchangeable element. The history...

Helmut Lachenmann
For me, composing means searching, discovering and showing a rich and peaceful world to our senses, to our ears, which are not so far from our brain, and which may also take part, perhaps by sending a message to our heart. Having discovered such a world and prised it open from within ourselves, we are happy because we feel enriched. And I believe this is the only way of thinking that allows us to carry on.

Salvatore Sciarrino
Whereas others generally compose as a sum of things, of convergences, and the composition is the final consequence of a whole series of actions and hence a more determinist approach, I on the other hand start from the final idea, from a sound image which I then endeavour to bring into being. It’s a way of composing which I find more image-based, more responsible.
When the composer teaches, he must place himself at the service...

Hugues Dufourt
The Aesthetics of Ardour and Courage The music of my young contemporaries reminds me of the re-emergence of infernal elements from the underworld. Their ‘gestures’ evocate those of the Chants de Maldoror by virtue of their aggressive vitality and the ferment of conquest which, rising from the depths, emerge with disarming effervescence. Thunder and lightning, lashing seas, stormy skies, harsh and sarcastic sonorities:...
