History
In 1937, Man Ray published a volume of drawings, illustrations of the poems by his friend and poet Paul Eluard, titled Les Mains Libres. The drawings proved very successful and were displayed on various occasions. In 1971–72, the Galleria Il Fauno in Turin, located in Piazza Carignano (the space in Piazza Carignano from 1980 onwards would become the Giancarlo Salzano contemporary art gallery, which for various years was one of the leading galleries on the Turinese arts scene) asked Man Ray whether they might create a series of bronze sculptures inspired by his drawings. The plaster casts were made in Turin, and then presented to Man Ray who gave his approval. In a Turin workshop, those casts were used to make a limited run of ten bronze sculptures. A critical edition of the drawings and poems (but not of the sculptures) was published in 2013 by Gallimard Folioplus.
The Fondazione Spinola will also take part in the talk organised at Artissima by RESO’, International Network for Artist Residencies and Educational Programs.
