DINA DANISH

Born in Paris, France in 1981, Egyptian artist Dina Danish studied at the American University in Cairo, Egypt and received a MFA at California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA.

Winner of the Illy Present Future award at Artissima 18, IT and finalist to several other awards including Illy Award at Art Rotterdam, NL and SECA Art Award at SFMOMA, CA, Danish’s recent solo exhibitions include Re-Play: Back in 10 Minutes, SpazioA, Pistoia, IT, 2012; A Matter of Time, Galerie Barbara Seiler, Zurich, 2011; and Shmina Shamnish, Jeanine Hofland Contemporary Art, 2011. Selected group exhibitions include Run, Comrade, The Old World is Behind You, and I Must Say That At First It Was Difficult Work, Kunsthall Oslo, A Fantasy For Allan Kaprow, CIC in Cairo in collaboration with Kunsthalle Bern, Two Versions of the Imaginary at Annet Gelink, Amsterdam. Danish has also performed Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonata at the Cairo Pavilion of the Amsterdam Biennial.

Danish was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2009-2010, and PiST///, Istanbul, 2012, and resides mainly in Amsterdam.

Danish’s work combines conceptual art’s preoccupation with language and structure with an interest in misunderstanding, mistranslation and superstition. Linguistic curiosities and modules (cadence, pronunciation, correction, stuttering) or general structures, units, and standards, offer materials and strategies for offhanded works that are often absurd or casual. Danish's work usually takes form in different media, including video, photography, painting and sculpture. In the last few years, Danish has followed a research process that attempts to analyze various incidents. These incidents usually vary in subject matter. They can range from tongue twisters, counting, poetry, the audience and the performer, and the list goes on.
