Doug Ashford

Doug Ashford is an artist, teacher and writer. He is an associate professor at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (NY) where he has taught three-dimensional wood design, sculpture, public art and theory since 1989. Ashford’s first expression of visual practices (1982-1996) was Group Material, a militant collective of New York artists made up of Doug Ashford, Julie Ault, Felix Gonzales-Torres and Tim Rollins, and which spawned more than 40 exhibitions and shared projects on an international level. Since 1996, Ashford has continued to produce works, to write and create public/museum projects. His most recent publication was the book Who Cares, (Creative Time, 2006), featuring a series of conversations between Ashford and a series of other cultural operators on the topics of public expression, beauty and ethics. He is currently working on a number of canvases.
